The Highest Grossing Movie To Date in the USA

Currently the highest grossing movie to date in the USA is Avatar the epic science-fiction film written and directed by James Cameron which was released in 2009.It took over the record held by another Cameron epic Titanic which held the record for 12 years.Avatar was the first film to gross more than $2 billion but with the re-release of Titanic in 3D to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the sinking it could overtake Avatar by the end of 2012.

For a long time Gone With The Wind held this accolade but in 1997 James Cameron's epic movie about the sinking of the Titanic held the record having grossed $1843,201,268.It held this record for 12 years until another Cameron epic, the science-fiction movie Avatar took the movie world by storm and grossed $2783,165,628 after it was released in 2009.It became the first film ever to gross more than $2 million.

Three years later Avatar is still the highest grossing movie but with the re-release of Titanic in 3D to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Ship of Dreams Titanic could well overtake Avatar by the end of 2012.

Written and directed by James Cameron he actually completed the 80-page treatment for Avatar in 1994,three years before Titanic was released. He intended to start shooting his newest epic as soon as Titanic went on general release but there are many special effects in Avatar and the technology to produce these effects was not in place in 1997 and Cameron would not start work on it until the technology was available.

Like Titanic Avatar is a long film running for nearly three hours but the story is more complicated than the straightforward story of the stricken liner and you do have to be a sci-fi fan to really enjoy it.

It is set in the future in the mid 22nd Century and takes place on a moon called Pandora. The leading character in a paraplegic marine Jake Sully, played by Sam Worthington, who is sent to Pandora to report back on a new mining colony where humans are mining a precious metal called unobtanium.

Jake finds the leader of the miners is Parker Selfridge (Giovanni Ribisi) who is determined to exterminate the inhabitants of Pandora,a humanoid species called Na'vi so they can search for the precious metal in the woodland where the Na'vi live.

Jake begins to bond with the tribe and falls in love with an alien Neytiri and he is torn between following orders and protecting the humanoid tribe and the moon he has come to think of as home. The film ends with an intense battle to save Pandora.

Avatar got rave reviews and fans called it the most entertaining and enthralling cinematic experience they had ever seen.It was nominated for 9 Academy Awards and won 3,Best Cinematography,Best Visual Effects and Best Art Direction. It will be interesting to see if Cameron's Titanic overtakes Avatar by the end of the year,
