Dark Shadows

In May 2012 the new feature film Dark Shadows will prevue in the USA.

In May 2012 the new feature film Dark Shadows will prevue in the USA. With such actors as Johnny Depp(Barnabas Collins), Helena Bonham Carter (Dr. Julia Hoffman), Cloe Moretz(Carolyn Stoddard) and Michelle Pfieffer(Elizabeth Collins Stoddard). Creator Dan Curtis ,who did the original tv series, and Seth Grahame-Smith will do the screenplay. Danny Elfman's score for the film will include the original Dark Shadows theme tune by Robert Cobert.

Johnny Depp was so obsessed with Barnabas Collins as a child that he wanted to be him. He is now collaborating with Tim Burton on the theatrical film adaptation.

Original tv series actors Jonathan Frid(Barnabas Collins), David Selby(Quentin Collins) and Lara Parker(Angelique) and Kathryn Leigh Scott(Maggie Evans) have been confirmed as having cameo appearances in the film.

Dark Shadows came on daytime tv June,27, 1966 and was a popular daytime soap until it was cancelled on April, 2, 1971. Major writers included Sam Hall, Gordon Russell and Malcolm Marmorstein as well as Art Wallace. With various monsters, witches, warlocks, werewolves and ghosts, zombies, time travel  and a parallel universe the original tv serie's special effects pale in comparison to today's.

There have been several movies made with House of Dark Shadows in 1970 the first. They used the same actors from the daytime series. The 1970 Parallel Time Storyline was used to make the skeleton cast seem plausible on the daytime soap while production of the movie was in full gear. With a strict budget of $750,000 and just six week to shoot House of Dark

Shadows became MGM's most profitable movie of the year.

In March of 1971 The Curse of Dark Shadows later retitled Night of Dark Shadows' filming began. Jonathan Frid was tired of playing the  vampire role and so Dan Curtis and Sam Hall wrote the new story showcasing the characters of Angelique and Quentin. The finished film was 129 minutes and MGM ordered it be trimmed to 96 minutes. With such key cuts the film opened to mediocre reviews. MGM requested a third film but Dan Curtis refused the offer wanting to persue other things.

An original 129 minute cut of the Night of Dark Shadows was found in 1999 by researcher Darren Gross. The film was in excellent condition but sadly the soundtrack was incomplete. Gross is attempting a full restoration even employing surviving actors to dub scenes with lost audio. At present no date has been set to finalize any plans.

Lara Parker who played Angelique Bouchard went

on to write Dark Shadows: Angelique's Descent in 1998. She also wrote an introduction for the sequel Dark Shadows: Dreams of the Dark in 1999, and in 2006 she published her second Dark Shadows novel The Salem Branch.

Rewrites began for a television pilot in December 2003 with John Wells Productions and Dan Curtis Productions in association with  Warner Bros. Television slated for WB Fall 2004. But the network rejected the pilot and no other home for the pilot could be found.

Several of the original cast are gone now. Joan Bennett(Elizabeth Collins Stoddard) was the only cast member to be represented with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. She received this honor in 1960. She died of a  heart attack in 1990 at her home in Scarsdale, New York. Thayer David (Professor T Elliot Stokes) died of a heart attack in July 1978 in New York at age 51. Also Grayson Hall(Dr. Julia Hoffman) died of lung cancer August 1985 in New York.

The original tv series begins with Victoria Winters coming by train to Collinsport to be a nanny for David Collins. Barnabas' character comes to the show a year into its production. In the new movie version in production now a young Barnabas comes across the sea from Liverpool England with his parents Joshua and Naomi Collins to begin a new life in America. As the story goes Barnabas breaks the heart of Angelique(Eva Green)who turns him into a vampire and buries him alive.
